Concern: Pigmentation

Skin pigmentation can be a source of self-consciousness or embarrassment. Many people with this condition feel the need to hide or conceal their skin. If you deal with pigmentation, you may be looking for ways to restore your skin to an even, consistent appearance.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by a build-up of melanin. This is a pigment that occurs naturally in the skin.

Your body aims to evenly distribute melanin to protect you from sun damage. The issue arises when your body produces too much melanin, causing patches of discoloured skin. These spots can form anywhere on the face and body.

In most cases, pigmentation is harmless; it doesn’t indicate a health condition nor cause pain. But it’s often a source of emotional discomfort and distress.

At Spotless Laser Medical Aesthetics, we offer skin resurfacing treatments for pigmentation removal. Feel beautiful in your skin with our laser and clinical skin treatments.

What Causes Skin Pigmentation?

You know that pigmentation is caused when your body produces more melanin. But why does this happen?

You may have been born with skin discolouration, or it may have appeared just recently. Several factors affect your body’s melanin production. The main risk factors include:

Aging

Also known as sun spots or liver spots, this type of discolouration tends to appear when people are 50+.

Sun exposure

If your skin is damaged, your body may produce melanin to help protect it.

Skin colour

Those with light or dark brown skin are more likely to develop pigmentation.

Pregnancy

Hormonal fluctuations related to pregnancy are often the cause of pigmentation.

Damage or inflammation

After a skin injury, your skin may overproduce melanin, causing dark or red patches.

Genetics

If pigmentation runs in your family, you may be more likely to develop this condition.

Signs of Pigmentation

Not sure if your skin issues are caused by pigmentation? If you notice the following symptoms, you may be dealing with this common condition:

Uneven skin tone

When your body overproduces melanin, it causes the skin to turn brown, red, or yellow in certain spots.

Freckles or moles

These dark skin spots are typically caused by sun exposure. They may be spread along the skin or grow in a cluster.

Dark spots on the hands and face

If you have developed pigmentation due to sun exposure, it typically appears in areas that are often exposed to UV rays. This includes the face, hands, and neck.

If you suspect that you may have hyperpigmentation, we recommend contacting your doctor first. It’s important to check in with a medical professional; they can rule out if your symptoms are caused by a health issue, such as a skin disease or a hormonal imbalance.

Our Services for Pigmentation

If you’re dealing with pigmentation, our laser treatments and skin resurfacing procedures are just what you’re looking for. Our treatments for treating pigmentation include:

Laser therapy

The most popular hyperpigmentation treatment is IPL (or intense pulsed light) therapy. The treatment involves the DermaLase device. It’s particularly effective at treating hyperpigmentation, age spots, and rosacea.

The DermaLase handheld device targets melanin within the skin and breaks it down using heated energy. Our estheticians can treat almost any area of the body with laser therapy.

We tailor our laser treatments based on your skin type and tone. At our medical clinic, we recommend the following laser therapies for pigmentation:

  • Pico Laser Treatments

  • Clear & Brilliant Permea

  • Nano (Q-switch) Nd: Yag treatment

Leading up to your treatment, avoid using any skin lightening or retinol creams. Limit your sun exposure, and be sure to wear sunscreen.

A common question is if laser treatments are painful. Our patients report mild discomfort during the procedure. There is little to no downtime after the treatment is complete, although your skin may appear red and feel sensitive afterward.

Many patients ask how many sessions it will take to get rid of pigmentation completely. It depends on the extent and depth of the discolouration. You might choose to schedule 1-4 treatments for optimal results.

Chemical peels

Consider trying a chemical peel, a skin resurfacing treatment that deeply exfoliates the skin.

During your treatment, a chemical solution will be applied to the affected area. Dead skin cells will slough off to reveal new, more evenly-toned skin underneath. For the most effective results, be sure to follow the after-care instructions provided by your esthetician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best treatment for pigmentation?

The answer will depend on the cause and the severity of your pigmentation. When you meet with one of our estheticians, we can assess your skin and determine the best treatment option for you.

What happens after the treatment?

Once you’ve completed your treatment, follow this post-treatment routine:

  • Try to avoid excessive sun exposure as much as possible.

  • If you’re in the sun, wear sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15.

  • Keep your skin hydrated and drink plenty of water.

By taking care of your skin, you can ensure that your results will last longer.

Am I a good candidate for pigmentation treatments?

If you deal with any of the following skin conditions, you’ll see effective results from our pigmentation treatments:

  • Brown spots

  • Sun damaged skin

  • Uneven skin tone

During your in-person consultation, we’ll assess your skin type to determine if you’re a good candidate for our hyperpigmentation treatments. We will consider your medical history, any allergies you may have, your skin type, and your family history.

How long does a typical treatment take?

Treatment times vary depending on which option you choose. If you select a chemical peel, treatments can take between 30-90 minutes. IPL treatments take upwards of 30 minutes. With repeated treatments, you can expect to see more substantial results.
