How it works
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser — an intense, pulsating beam of light — to remove unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.
Hair Growth Cycle
It is very important to understand the hair growth cycles to optimize your hair removal regimen. There are three stages of hair growth in our body (see graphic below). Laser hair removal is only effective on hairs in the anagen phase which is about 30% of your hair at any given time. A cycle lasts 6-10 weeks, so it is important to keep consistent frequency and timing for your treatments to obtain the best results.
Anagen (Growing Phase)
When hair is active and attached to the root, this is when laser hair removal is most effective.
Catagen (Transition Phase)
This is the transitional stage that lasts about ten days. The hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the root.
Telogen (Resting Phase)
This is the resting phase, when new hairs are in the process of growing from the root.
Return to Anagen (New Hair Phase)
After a cycle of laser treatments, new anagen hair will be thinner and softer.

laser hair removal faq
Hair grows in cycles. The length of the hair cycle will change not only depending on the person but also on the body part that is being treated. In order to effectively treat the hair, the length of that cycle has to be taken into account. The shorter the treatment and growth cycle, the more frequent the treatments (like in the face) will be. The longer the growth cycle, like in the legs and back, the less frequent the treatments will be.
This all depends on the colour of your eyes, hair, skin colour and sun reaction. The name given to this is “Fitzpatrick Scale”.
The laser is programmed according to your skin colour, this is determined during your complimentary consultation and test patch.
If you’re looking for a completely permanent solution, FDA-approved electrolysis will get rid of hair forever. Laser hair removal permanently reduces hair, drastically lessening the actual hair growth and thins out the hair so that you can stop shaving forever.
If you’ve gone through waxing, laser hair removal will be much less painful than that. However, the sensation is different—it can be described as a short rubber band snapping against the skin for a short second. Each laser pulse can destroy the hair within the area—a size of a quarter—meaning that the entire treatment is relatively fast. Anesthetic cream is also available for patients who choose to use it.
If you’re looking for a longer-lasting and less painful solution, laser hair removal or electrolysis should be in your radar. In the long run, you’ll save money and time switching from temporary methods like waxing and shaving.
On average, although depending on the area in which you are wishing to be treated, a patient will go through 5 to 10 treatments to get the longest results. These treatments are spread out between 6-8 week intervals—depending on the growth cycle of that body part.
After going the first session, the treated hair should be expected to shed out within a period of 3 weeks. If you would like to speed up the process, you can also scrub gently with a loofa in that area while showering to help encourage the elimination of hair.
